Hsi Lai Girl Scouts Troop 18894 member Kristin Chieh received a Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles on June 5 at Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
Chieh’s project, titled Stay Fit for Your Wellness, addressed child obesity. She developed a program to motivate children to engage in physical activity and teach them about healthy eating. By incorporating Chinese martial arts, the program helped participants see how exercise can be fun and beneficial.
The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles has led in the number of Gold Awards in the U.S., and this year was no exception. The 239 recipients this year amassed over 19,120 hours of community service, and their projects ranged from helping seniors avoid scam calls, improving food security for lower-income families, and planting fruit trees in the spirit of social improvement and community care.
In addition to the awards ceremony, the event also celebrated the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary. Former scout Malia Mailes shared her experiences and encouraged her juniors, reminding them that although the Gold Award is the pinnacle of a scout’s achievements, it is but the beginning of a life of service.
