Bright red peace lanterns adorned Hsi Lai Temple inside and out for the New Year’s Festival — January 1st through February 15th. Families, friends, and visitors came together to share in the excitement of new beginnings and were welcomed by numerous lanterns aglow, including the colorful creative courtyard scenes depicting four previous lives of the Buddha to encourage everyone to practice loving kindness and compassion.
(1) The Compassionate Deer King when the Buddha, in a previous life, was a deer king who used his immense compassion and profound wisdom to save his herd from being killed by a human king.
(2) The Hungry Tigress.
(3) The Selfless Hare
(4) The Forgiving Forbearance Dragon.
Venerable Abbot Hui Dong’s words inspired online viewers to use—both—wisdom and compassion in daily life, through a New Year’s video, as everyone’s heart, thoughts, words, and actions become gentler and more aligned with Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s 2022 blessing: “May All Beings Live Without Fear and Coexist in Peace” our world will truly become a happier place.
New Year’s is a joyous time for families and individuals to make Light Offering wishes to receive auspicious blessings, hope for a new year filled with happiness, harmony, health, and prosperity. The warmth of the Dharma and the beauty of the lanterns, once again, successfully integrated culture, tradition and Buddhism at Hsi Lai Temple.
